Well, we’re over a year into the recovery from Superstorm Sandy, work around here is not done yet. Please don’t forget that there are many people who are still not back in their homes. There are a lot of houses still being lifted or demolished. And a lot of houses that are still empty. I returned to my house in Keansburg NJ in mid-February. Things are pretty much back to normal for me. Though I do still have to bring a lot of things down from my attic and put them in their proper places.

I’m still working at WBJB-FM, Brookdale Public Radio at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft NJ. I am the Music Director and afternoon on air host, every Monday through Friday 3p-7p. In December I hosted the 21st Annual Asbury Music Awards, for the 3rd time, at the Stone Pony. We won for Top Local Radio Station for the 13th year in a row. You can visit the website to listen online. Specifically, a “Triple A” radio station. That stands for “Adult Album Alternative.”

My folks are still retired and doing okay. Dad is still singing with the Orpheus Club, a mens chorus based in nearby Ridgewood NJ. Big project this fall was to have most of the house painted and replace the carpeting.

The kids, Gordon and Teresa’s kids, are still getting older and bigger. Stephanie is now 19 and a sophomore engineering student at Alfred University in Alfred NY. She seems to be doing very well there and is enjoying it. She’s joined the school dance team so she’s still dancing. She also joined the school “activities/entertainment board” type club, the club that puts on events, shows and concerts on campus. So she’s been involved in many live music events, running sound and setting up/breaking down concerts. Obviously, her favorite uncle’s interests have rubbed off on her! This year she is even the head of the music and technical committees.

Phillip is 16 now and is trying to become a one man brass band. He’s already played trumpet and baritone in the school band, and now he’s added trombone to his repetoire. He was also the team manager for the high school’s girls volleyball team again.

Victoria is 12! She’s still playing soccer, and is very good. She went back to dance class and has started playing volleyball as well.

And the youngest member of the family, Gizmo the Papillon, is still reaking havoc wherever he goes and getting too many treats from Grandma.

As some folks have noticed over the last several years, I stopped getting real haircuts in favor of just getting my head shaved twice a year. I know mom noticed. And then with everything that happened after Sandy I pretty much forgot about getting a haircut for almost a year and a half. So, some folks were shocked when in August, for the first time in 12 or 13 years, I got an actual haircut courtesy of my good friend Cortney. She’s the singer and songwriter in a great Asbury Park based band called Harper’s Fellow. As well as being a great hair stylist.

anniversarypostcardAt the end of October I celebrated my 25th anniversary on Jersey Shore airwaves. 1988-2001 at WHTG-FM, FM106.3; and 2001-2013 at 90.5 The Night, Brookdale Public Radio. 25 years, 2 stations, 1 market. Even I’m impressed by that. So, I figured we should have a party. So on October 26 at The Wonder Bar in Asbury Park we did. I knew that Jesse Malin (aka “Cousin Jesse”) had a show scheduled with a great band from Queens called Hollis Brown. I asked him if we could turn the show into my anniversary party. He and everyone involved said “yes,” so we did. I invited Harper’s Fellow, my favorite local band to open the night and they started what was one of the best nights of the year.youaintgoingnowhere_laurajohnsonEveryone on stage singing (or not) Bob Dylan’s “You Ain’t Going Nowhere.” [Photo by Laura Johnson.]
