Been having an online conversation about “punk rock” the last few days. Which has led me to this…

In 1984, what do you think would happen if you got one of the originators and most influential DJs and rappers in US hip hop together with one of the originators and most influential voices in UK punk rock? Afrika Bambaataa had created the Time Zone project and, at the suggestion of bassist and producer Bill Laswell, asked Johnny (Rotten) Lydon of the Sex Pistols to join in for a single called “World Destruction.” (Predating the acknowledged birth of rock-rap collaborations, Run DMC & Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way,” by 2 years.)

  1. “World Destruction” is such an excellent song and a wonderful collaboration. Wish Johnny Rotten would’ve done more songs with Bambaataa. They make beautiful music together.
